Reading Assignments

Reading Instructions

Reading assignments are worth 10% of the grade in this course. They are due at 8 AM each class day and should be completed on Learning Suite under the "Exams" tab. Generally, they will ask the following questions:

  1. Did you carefully read the entire reading assignment for today's class?
  2. What did you find most difficult about the reading assignment for today's class?
  3. Write something reflective about the reading. This could be the answer to "What was the most interesting part of the reading?" or "How does this connect to something else you have learned?" or "How is this relevant or useful to your intellectual or career interests?" or something else.

Assignments

  1. For Friday September 4: Answer the following introduction questions.
    • What year in school are you, and what is your major? Which post-calculus math courses have you taken?
    • Tell me about a math professor/teacher you have had who was most and/or least effective and what they did that worked well/poorly.
    • What do you hope to get out of this course?
  2. For Friday September 4: Read Sections 1.1-1.2.
  3. For Wednesday September 9: Read Section 1.3.
  4. For Friday September 11: Read Section 1.4.
  5. For Monday September 14: Read Section 1.5.
  6. For Wednesday September 16: Read Section 1.7.
  7. For Friday September 18: Read Sections 1.8-1.9.
  8. For Monday September 21: Read Section 1.10.
  9. For Wednesday September 23: Read Section 2.1.
  10. For Friday September 25: Read Section 3.1.
  11. For Monday September 28: Read Section 3.2.
  12. For Wednesday September 30: Read Section 3.3.
  13. For Friday October 2: Read Section 3.4.
  14. For Monday October 5: Read Section 4.1.
  15. For Wednesday October 7: Read Section 4.2.
  16. For Friday October 9: Read Section 4.3.
  17. For Monday October 12: Read Section 4.4.
  18. For Wednesday October 14: As you study for the exam, respond to the following questions.
    • Which topics and theorems do you think are important out of those we have studied?
    • What kinds of questions do you expect to see on the exam?
    • What do you need to work on understanding better before the exam? Come up with a mathematical question you would like to see answered or a problem you would like to see worked out.
  19. For Friday October 16: Read Section 5.1.
  20. For Monday October 19: Read Section 5.2.
  21. For Wednesday October 21: Read Section 5.3.
  22. For Friday October 23: Read Section 5.4.
  23. For Monday October 26: Read Section 5.5.
  24. For Wednesday October 28: Read Section 5.6.
  25. For Friday October 30: What has contributed most to your learning in this class thus far? How long have you spent on the homework assignments? Did lecture and the reading prepare you for them? What do you think would help you learn more effectively or make the class better for you? This can be feedback for me or goals for yourself.
  26. For Monday November 2: Read Section 5.7.
  27. For Wednesday November 4: Read Section 6.1.
  28. For Friday November 6: Read Section 6.2.
  29. For Monday November 9: Read Section 6.3.
  30. For Wednesday November 11: Read Section 6.5 through subsection 6.5.1.
  31. For Friday November 13: Read the rest of Section 6.5.
  32. For Monday November 16: As you study for the exam, respond to the following questions.
    • Which topics and theorems do you think are important out of those we have studied?
    • What kinds of questions do you expect to see on the exam?
    • What do you need to work on understanding better before the exam? Come up with a mathematical question you would like to see answered or a problem you would like to see worked out.
  33. For Wednesday November 18: Read Section 8.1.
  34. For Friday November 20: Read Section 8.2.
  35. For Monday November 23: Read Section 8.5.
  36. For Monday November 30: Read Section 8.6.
  37. For Wednesday December 2: Read Section 8.7.
  38. For Friday December 4: Read Section 7.1 and Section 7.2.1.
  39. For Monday December 7: Read Section 7.3.
