Title: Disjointly tree-graded spaces.

Abstract: We will define disjointly tree-graded spaces, which is a special case of a more general construction of Drutu-Sapir. We will then discuss their fundamental groups and show how they can be used to build pi_1-injective maps.

Title: Shape Theory and Stong Shape Theory

Abstract: Homotopy Theory is one of the fundamental tools of Algebraic Topology. Homotopy Theory allows for the construction of algebraic invariants that describe topological properties through algebraic structures. While an extremely successful and useful tool, it is limited in its ability to describe spaces that are not homotopy equivalent to CW-complexes. Shape theory and Strong shape theory extend the notion of homotopy theory to spaces that are locally non-trivial. We explore the standard constructions of Shape Theory and Strong Shape Theory, their fruitful algebraic invariants, and how they relate to one another and to standard algebraic invariants of spaces.

Title: A knotted projective plane that can't be reduced

Abstract: One way to construct a knotted projective plane in the 4-sphere is to take the connected sum of a standard projective plane with a knotted 2-sphere. A longstanding conjecture of Kinoshita asserts that every knotted projective plane can be obtained in this way. I will describe a counterexample, constructed from a classical knot and a braid, and explain how the peripheral subgroup of its complement provides an obstruction to this decomposition. The construction also yields a knotted Klein bottle answering a related question. The talk will discuss the geometry of the construction and the main ideas of the proof. This is joint work with Seungwon Kim, Maggie Miller, and Gheehyun Nahm.
